The Beauty in Alopecia

Ever heard of alopecia?

There are different types of this chronic illness but essentially it is an auto immune disorder that causes loss of hair. This happens because the immune system gets confused and attacks the hair follicles but not indefinitely and not permanently.

Rather, it is random.

One day you could have a full head of hair and the next you'll find bald patches around your scalp. The hair loss often comes and goes—hair will grow back over several months in one area but will fall out in another area.

This is known as alopecia areata and it is the one people are more commonly affected by. When you've lost all the hair on your scalp it's called alopecia totalis.
But there are the rare instances where alopecia universalis occurs which is total body hair loss.

Not an inch of hair to be found anywhere—no eyebrows, eyelashes, nose hair or anywhere.

One thing to be thankful for is, alopecia is not painful, it does not make you feel sick, and it does not result in serious health problems. It is not contagious and will not hinder everyday actions.

BUT

it does take a toll on the confidence and self esteem!

Hair plays a big part in our appearance. And I know how it felt....

Almost no one can ever imagine the feeling I have when I constantly need to hide every single day and wonder if people will notice the missing eyebrows and eyelashes.

It did bring anxiety and depression as I deal with it specially when I was younger!
